542 Fourth Avenue

The former Allegheny County Morgue is located at 542 Fourth Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. This Historically Designated structure was designed by Frederick Osterling and constructed in 1901. Formerly occupied by the County Coroner’s office, the building has been re-purposed to house the Allegheny County Health Department.

A new internal structure supports an infill floor for additional square footage, while new mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems were put in place. Emphasis was placed on restoring historic features and details original to the building, ensuring that new elements matched the aesthetic of the original building.

In the course of investigation at the outset of the project, two Richardsonian Romanesque barrel-vaulted chapel spaces were uncovered. These unique spaces were restored to their original character.
